During the latest Agatha Christie Festival in Torquay, I met some college-Agatha Christiefans (some of them I already knew for a long time). Mathew Prichard – Agatha’s enige kleinzoon en al decennialang de scepter zwaaiend over de nalatenschap van de Queen of Crime – liet in een volgepakt Torquay Museum maar liefst een kleine drie kwartier uniek geluidsmateriaal horen van recent gevonden tapes van de schrijfster. Na afloop van de lezing, was Prichard zo vriendelijk om een Kodakmomentje in te lassen en mijn boek te signeren.

Mathew Prichard – Agatha’s only grandchild and President of Agatha Christie Ltd. (a Chorion Company) for decades – gave an interesting lecture about the worldfamous – recently found – tapes from the Queen of Crime. About 45 minutes of those tapes were performed in the Torquay Museum. After the lecture, Prichard kindly signed my book.

Boeken uit Agatha Christie’s eigen collectie

Uiteraard ben ik (wederom) met koffers vol merchandise en memorabilia teruggekeerd uit Torquay. Mijn mooiste aanwinsten? Drie boeken uit Agatha Christie’s eigen bibliotheek in Greenway House. Het meest trots ben ik op het boek Flying Dutchman van Michael Arlen. Waarom? Agatha’s favoriete componist Richard Wagner bewerkte het boek tot een operastuk. Saillant detail: Christie werd na een – met Archibald Christie – bijgewoonde opera in het Pavillion ten huwelijk gevraagd.

Verder heb ik ook nog F. Ansteys Vice Versa – A Lesson to Fathers (Ex Libris van Captain A.J. Dawson, een goede vriend van Christie, red.) en An Intermediate Commercial Geography van L. Dudley Stamp op de spreekwoordelijke kop weten te tikken.
